The sculptures of aquatic animals symbolizing different sports of the water world championships have been inaugurated. The sculptures were made by Gábor Miklós Szőke, one of the most renowned contemporary artists in Hungary.
The basic concept of the campaign of the 17th FINA World Championships was to present the six water sports of the program through legendary aquatic creatures. This is how the Water Legends sculpture set was born, which present the similarities between legendary animals and sports: the shark, the most feared animal in water is the symbol of swimming, the whale, the sea wanderer is the symbol of open water swimming. The dolphin’s gracefulness reminds us of diving, and the orca has become the symbol of high diving. Synchronized swimming is representedby the socially co-ordinating school of fish, creating formations. Water polo is symbolized by the octopus.
The campaign film of the 17th FINA World Championships, where the animal sculptures come to life, is also based on the interrelation between legendary creatures and water sports.
Gábor Miklós Szőke, who was invited to make the sculptures, accepted the invitation, because he found the basic idea of the campaign exciting. ’I have always been interested in the aquatic fauna of deep water, the power and the mystery inherent in them. Planning was the result of continuous experimentation. I found out the charactesr of the animals by taking into account the analogy of water sports, and I first designed them in the form of a 3D model: they come to life in the film. I formulated the inner strength of the water legends appearing in the animal body by playing with materials of different weight, size and working. Every animal is completely different: some sculptures are made up of rustic, chopped, milled, natural surfaces and hand-carved hardwood elements, that are connected in the sculpture to metal, huge welded steel plates and industrial components. Aquatic legends have ancient power, extraordinary performance and technology, which also characterize our top athletes’ – said the creator.
Out of the sculptures showing dynamism and primeval force, the shark, the whale and the dolphin are located in the fan zone at the Duna Arena. The octopus is in the fan zone of Margitsziget, the school of fish can be found at the competition venue of synchronized swimming in Városliget, while the sculpture of the orca can be seen on Batthyány Square.
